Be Happy?

There are many things in 2012 for which my heart is deeply grateful. Among these I highlight the care, love and dedication of my family and the faith community that God gave us in South Africa over the years, as we have worked in this region of the continent. That is, Kenilworth Community Presbyterian Church. The ethnic diversity of its members, along with the attention and care demonstrated towards each other is something for which I am deeply grateful to God.

The spirit of generosity, of giving of themselves for the others is a distinctive characteristic of this Christian community. Last night as we gathered for New Year’s eve prayer the text in Acts 20:35 came to mind; it says, “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

I am glad to see that in this community people understand that there is joy in sharing and in giving. Actually, we are called by God to give what we have received for free. And the most precious gift we ever received is His abundant life. We freely received it to share with the world around us. And sharing with others the true life is absolutely delightful. It is gratifying to share our time and energy with those who need it. It’s annoying to see people insisting that the most important thing in life is to “BE HAPPY”. They don’t realize that there is no greater joy than to bring true happiness to those around us, and Christ is the true joy. submitted by the Rev. G. A. Rios
